The large range of reeds can initially be somewhat intimidating. In the face of so much choice we’re now giving sax players the opportunity to try out a selection of reeds with the REED-PACK.

Another small confusion is the variance between each manufactures approach to grading strength. Vandoren 2.5 does not compare with D'Addario 2.5 which does not compare with Hemke 2.5 for example. Even within the same manufacturer, there are variances between the graded strengths; a Vandoren Traditional 2.5 will be much harder than a Vandoren ZZ 2.5, which is a little bit softer than a Red Java 2.5 and so on!

Because of this, we have tested and bundled together a selection strengths that are all relative to each other. In a reed pack at strength 2.5 for example you may see some strength 3 and 3.5 of other models. These are all relative and are of the same actual strength in accordance with our own professional testing and customer feedback!

The pack includes 1 of each:

Rico- Royal, Jazz Select (Filed), Plasticover, Hemke, La Voz

Vandoren- Blue, Java, Red Java, ZZ, V16

"very useful"
Ive been playing the sax for a while and thought Id settled on a reed for life. I use LaVoz reeds and while they cut through on stage and had the response I liked I felt that it wasnt in their nature to play pretty, you had to impose that more than you might like. I ordered the reed pack and conducted a blind test. Straight away I rejected the fibracell and all from one manufacturer, based largely on the feel I was used to. The final few I spent a bit more time on and was ultimately left with a choice between daddario and Hemke. I chose the Hemke based on its tonal characteristics and feel. I feel very happy with my slightly changed sound and hence play better. These are just my personal thoughts, my recommendation lies in giving you the easy ability to select or reselect. One suggestion Id make though is that you could leave space for another manufacturers reeds, e.g. Alexander.

I bought this pack last year after taking up the sax again after 20 years. Back then I used what my teacher told me which was Rico. This was a real eye opener as they are all so different. I eventually settled for Hemke followed by La Voz. Could not get on with Vandoren at all even though my last teacher recommended them and the shop I recently bought my upgraded sax from. Dont listen to anyone else buy the pack and work your way through to find what suits you. Doesnt matter what it says online try out for yourself
