A perfect replacement for the legendary Selmer Mark VI.

Inspired by arguably the greatest saxophone of all time, the Selmer Reference 54 is an amalgamation of vintage sound and aesthetics and modern day reliability, bringing players closer to the famous saxophonists of yesteryear.

The Reference Series is Selmer’s nod towards their hugely popular saxophones of the past, encapsulating the spirit of these fantastic instruments into a newly refined design.

In the Reference 54, Selmer took inspiration from their hugely popular Mark VI - a strong centred sound with plenty of projection, whilst redesigning the neck, bore size and ergonomics. The result is an instantly recognisable sound in a sax that is a joy to play.

Compared to many vintage instruments, the key work on the Reference 54 is smooth and easy to play with a modern layout that improves tuning stability and makes side and palm keys a lot more accessible.

The Mark VI redesigned as one of the world’s finest modern production saxophones, what more could you ask for! A dream to play and a sound to die for. If you aspire to own a Mark VI you should give one of these beasts a play and you might just change your mind. Matthew Racine (

I found the Reference 54 a dream to play from top to bottom with a medium amount of resistance; just enough to help shape your sound and produce that famously centred warm tone. This sax is a worthy alternative to the high maintenance vintage instruments on the market today and should appeal to anybody looking for a high end instrument that is extremely versatile with a vintage pedigree.

I bought a Selmer Reference 54 tenor saxophone in honey gold lacquer about three years ago. It is a truly amazing horn. Its pedigree shows through from the minute you pick it up, put on the mouthpiece and blows it. Everything that you could want from a tenor saxophone is there, from warm, Stan Getz whispering tones, to sheer Clarence Clemons roar - this horn does it - and by the truckload! Of course, anything this well made will have its own personal traits. It takes a lot of time to warm this horn up, unlike, say, a Yanagisawa, which plays perfectly as soon as you pick it up, It also feels very heavy for a tenor. However, these are all things that I can happily live with, to get that sheer, wonderful sound. Incidentally, I would recommend the use of an Otto Link (or similar) mouthpiece, in order to get the best out of these horns. Purely a personal opinion.

Everything the other reviewer said and more. I cant recommend this horn enough its simply a beauty. I use an Otto Link which i was lucky enough to get drd by the late Doc Tenney. It roars and sings. This combo definitely works for me.
