Alexander Superial I Jazz Tenor Mouthpiece
A new modern-day classic! This mouthpiece is the creation of professional saxophonist Tom Alexander, famous for bringing us his line of premium reeds. Having immersed himself in the field of jazz throughout his career as a player, Tom later collaborated with some of the world’s leading saxophonists including Joe Henderson, David Liebman, Michael Brecker, Joe Lovano, Joshua Redman, Bob Berg, Branford Marsalis and more in conjunction with his reeds. Educated through many valuable experiences he had with these masters, Tom began to dream of embarking on a project to design what he felt might be a mouthpiece which could not only retain tonal qualities of great vintage pieces, but ones with more flexibility, versatility and better performance in present day playing situations.
This mouthpiece is capable of producing a large, focused sound from the bottom range and on up to altissimo, with greater punch and projection, an even scale and enhanced upper register. Its large chamber supports a full, rich, warm body in the tone, yet one achieved without tubbiness or stuffiness. It also generates a well-defined harmonic edge and balanced resistance. Further, the precise facings and the mouthpiece’s resonant shell allow a player to use a more open tip with ease and this gives the potential to create both a larger sound and a wider dynamic range.
The facing range is no. 7, 7*, 8, 8*, 9, 9*, 10 & 10* (favoured by Joe Lovano) and other facings may be available by special request. The Superial I Jazz Tenor is milled from the finest-grade German hard rubber bar stock on 5-Axis CNC machinery which enables great precision from piece to piece. Each mouthpiece is machined and hand-finished in the U.S.A. and comes with a logo'd Midnight Blue velvet pouch. Its attractive box firmly nests the mouthpiece and also can function well for touring.

Prior to even receiving these pieces I had a sense of excitement and anticipation as to what they could bring to the table; this was borne of many email discussions with the main man, Tom Alexander, on the back-history and potential of this mouthpiece. I have to say, I love people in our industry who are totally passionate and dedicated to their subject and craft, and this is Tom Alexander in abundance!
When finally trying the first piece that arrived (tip 8) I was blown away with the quality. It produced a sumptuous, big, dark, expansive sound, reminiscent of the most classic sounds from a golden era of jazz. It felt to me like you could pick any note on the tenor and you were surrounded by a wall of fatness, which really gives you a platform to lay into the sound if you want to bring out the upper harmonics and more powerful side of the sound spectrum.
For me, this mouthpiece is most at home if you want to sit comfortably in that straight-ahead vibe, it’s as if it was born to produce beautiful jazz lines and phrases with a sound that I’m sure would perfectly meld into a jazz trio set-up with double bass!
In my many years of playing sax I’ve never come across a mouthpiece that is visually so stunning, with a beautiful swirling red marble finish and a uniquely ornate decorative collar! - Jim Cheek
“The Alexander Superial 1 Jazz tenor mouthpiece is full of warm, beautiful colors. I find it responds wonderfully within my wide dynamic range…Try it, it may change your life.” Joe Lovano – Frequent Down Beat Critic’s No.1 Tenor Saxophonist.
“Tom Alexander’s new piece responds perfectly in all registers and has the ability to immediately respond to dynamic and ongoing expressive nuances which are crucial to my style. The Alexander Superial 1 Tenor Mouthpiece is going to make history!!” Dave Liebman – NEA Jazz Master
“GREAT mouthpiece, Tom! The Superial I Tenor is a tremendous option for anyone looking for a full, deep, resonant sound throughout the entire range of the instrument. It plays wonderfully and consistently, and I highly recommend trying it!” Donny McCaslin – Steps Ahead, David Bowie Band
Alexander Superial I Jazz Hard Rubber
Tenor Mouthpiece Has Vintage Aesthetic, Plenty of Punch.
Since the 1970s, saxophone specialist Tom Alexander has worked with some of the top names in jazz, including Michael Brecker, Dave Liebman, Joe Lovano, Joshua Redman, Donny McCaslin, Ravi Coltrane and Greg Osby. Saxophonists have been playing and singing the praises of his company’s Alexander Superial NY and DC Reeds for years. Now, Alexander has developed a mouthpiece that lives up to his reputation: the Superial I Jazz Tenor. In designing it, he envisioned a way to capture the essence of some great vintage mouthpieces while still having the ability to project enough for modern, amplified playing situations. This mouthpiece is capable of producing a large, focused sound from low B-flat up to the ahissimo register, with considerable punch and projection, an even scale and an enhanced upper register. Its large chamber supports a classic tone with full, warm body but without any stifling stuffiness.
It also generates a well-defined harmonic edge. Superial I Jazz Tenor gave me the sensation that my chops were somehow elongated into the very back of my throat And, like a diving board that gets more pliable the farther out you step, that extra length of air-column control functioned like a springboard for dramatic inflections when
pressed upon. All of this came easily—it felt as natural as singing or talking, which was revelatory. And even if I were tempted to get carried away with the bends, whinneys, vibrato, swells and other saxophonic effects that are possible with the Superial I Jazz Tenor, the mouthpiece provides just the right amount of well-balanced resistance to keep everything focused and properly governed. I loved the mouthpieces immediate response and the way it gave me access to complex tonal qualities that were even and consistent from one register to the next. I was knocked out by just how neatly my ahissimo notes slotted; in that regard, the Superial I Jazz Tenor is unlike any other piece I’ve tried. It helped me locate where those overtones resonated, so I was able to nail them every time. Superial 1 Jazz Tenor mouthpieces are made of German hard rubber
bar stock, and the ones I play-tested featured a cool red marble swirl. Something about it brings out tones that are ideal for straightahead jazz. After playing these mouthpieces for several months, I was able to find their their center and do pretty much anything I wanted, tenor-wise. Thanks to precise facings and the resonant body shell of these mouthpieces, you can use a more open tip if you want a larger sound with a wider dynamic range. They come in sizes 7-10* (other tip openings may be available by special request). - 76 DOWNBEAT MAY 2020 | email@example.com
