A Guide To Service & Repairs

sax.co.uk | Saxophone Repairs | A Guide to Service & Repairs

There is often confusion over what is service work and what is repair work. We consider service work as action required to keep a well cared for, undamaged instrument in good playing order. We consider repair work as action required to fix an instrument that has been damaged either by accident or through poor manufacture or maintenance. Consequently, worn/poorly maintained, poorly manufactured, and/or damaged instruments will require repair work before they can be serviced.

RUNNING REPAIRS
The most requested service for repairers. When time or financial restrictions require a compromise “just to keep it going.” Charged by the hour plus parts and anything other than the specific work carried out IS NOT GUARANTEED.

MINOR REPAIR WORK - From £5
Key straightening, small re-soldering jobs, and individual key repairs, minor dents, neck re-corks.

MAJOR REPAIR WORK
- Price on application
Any work not resulting from fair wear and tear such as dents, bent or misaligned keywork, bent bodies, damaged tone holes, poorly maintained and poorly manufactured instruments.

CHECKDOWN SERVICE, SET-UP & TEST - from £45
A thorough look over and inspection (without dismantling) recommended annually and for instruments not more than three years old, depending on level of use, or those that have received a thorough service within the last 5 years.

Poorly adjusted/seated pads can put a strain on keywork and keywork hinges/rods, causing premature wear in the instrument action. Leaky pads are the main reason for poor playability, this is especially true of pads that are closed when at rest. We use a combination of powerful leak lights and the traditional feeler paper technique to highlight any leaks in the air tightness of the horn.

Summary

• All keywork action, spring tensions checked, regulated and adjusted as required.
• All pads & seatings checked and adjusted as required.
• Worn or missing key corks/felts replaced (where possible without dismantling).
• Keywork pivot points re-oiled.
• Fully play tested.

FULL SERVICE - from £135
Recommended every 3 to 5 years for instruments over 3 years old depending on level of use and previous service history. Usually completed within one week if you call in advance and book your horn in. Extra charged if replacement parts are required such as pads & springs.

• All keywork action, spring tensions checked and adjusted as required. *
• All pads checked and adjusted as required.
