A Guide to Repairs and Servicing

REPAIR? or SERVICE?

There is often confusion over what is "repair work" and what is "service work".

We consider REPAIR WORK as action required to fix an instrument that has been damaged either by accident or through poor manufacture or poor maintenance.

We consider SERVICE WORK as action required to keep a well cared for, undamaged instrument in good playing order.

Poorly adjusted/seated pads can put a strain on keywork and keywork hinges/rods, causing premature wear in the key work and an unresponsive action. Leaky pads are the main reason for poor playability; this is especially true of pads that are closed when at rest. We use a combination of powerful leak lights and the traditional feeler paper technique to highlight any leaks in the air tightness of the horn.

Consequently, worn or poorly maintained, poorly manufactured, and/or damaged instruments will require repair work before they can be serviced.

Repair Work

Running Repairs: (FROM £25)
The most requested service for repairers, when time or financial restrictions require a compromise of "just to keep it going." Charged by the hour plus parts. Please note we can only guarantee the parts we fit and the actual work carried out.

Minor Repairs: (FROM £12.50)
Key straightening, small re-soldering jobs, and individual key repairs, broken spring replacement (not snapped off in pillar), minor easily accessible dents etc.

Major Repairs: (Price on inspection).
Any work required not covered under general servicing such as: worn/loose keywork, major dents, broken solder joints, bent or misaligned keywork, bent bodies, damaged tone holes, poorly maintained and poorly manufactured instruments.

Neck Re-cork: (£20.00)
Custom fitted for a specific mouthpiece (please provide mouthpiece).
