SWING 55 Tenor - Andy Brush
"This sax has a presence that will turn heads (not just on looks alone) and it did just that! I played it on an intimate gig and I have never received so many comments about how beautiful the sound was!!

For me, this is the closest I have come to finding that vintage sound that seems to be the ultimate goal for most! The horn delivers a very centred sound, with a big dark resonance that is consistent through all registers. The tuning is the most accurate I have ever known, which we come to expect from a Mauriat sax!

Altissimo's are so easy to produce they really do feel like part of the normal given register of the sax. Key positioning is extremely comfortable and everything sit's just in the right place without having to make any big stretches.

Believe me, I've tried to find something bad to say about this horn but, I can't!"

SWING 55 Tenor - first impressions.  Jim Cheek

"The new Swing 55 tenor from P. Mauriat has an immediate, yet subtle visual appeal - nicely understated.  The look is similar to the Selmer Reference, and the ornate engraving on the body, bell, bow & neck work well on the matt lacquer, creating a nicely balanced appearance.

As with all Mauriat saxes the key action feels crisp and positive and I found the key positioning to be very comfortable.

Now to the tone - if possible it's even weightier than the 66R! This is particularly noticeable down at the bottom and this ties in with my feeling that the response isn’t quite as immediate as with the 66R, but in exchange there seems to be even more breadth of sound on hand.  The Selmer Reference 36 (inspired by the 1936 balanced action model) has a similar feeling of breadth.

As you move through the middle to the top range the sound takes on a feeling of ‘centredness’  This is a common Mauriat trait, and I think it is why players liken it to the legendary Mk 6 – a centred but dark sound.

Often as you approach the palm key area on the tenor the tone can have a certain edginess that sax players often want to eliminate – you don't get this with the Swing 55 tenor, and as you continue up into the altissimo you get an incredible feeling of response coupled with great intonation - I’ve never tried a sax that feels so good up at the top!  To check it wasn’t my imagination I tried it against my own Selmer Series III and found that the Mauriat came out the winner." - jim@sax.co.uk
