“The deceiving thing about any solid silver sax is that you do not usually
realise it’s solid silver unless you are told so! This Mauriat is even more
deceptive as I’ve never come across a solid silver sax that’s been fully
gold plated. The weight of the horn is a clue as it is a little heavier
than, for example, the gold plated 67R. Price-wise it is in a similar
bracket to the solid silver Yanagisawa A9937 and the Selmer Sterling Silver
Series III so it made sense to compare it with these models as well as the
standard Mauriat pro models. Like any solid silver sax the response is
immediate. As you work from the low register and work through to the top
the sound transforms from a velvety richness to a searing, luminous and
powerful top end – think of the American smooth jazz sound!
In comparison to it’s peers, it’s not quite as bright as the Yanagisawa and not quite as dark as the Selmer. Overall it retains that Mauriat focus of sound and there is a certain silky brightness, which is wrapped, in a warm glow!! I’m sure the gold plating must factor into this.
Due to the immediate response of tone and incredible power on hand the altissimo felt supremely accessible. The sound has a different nature from that of the 67R, the System 76 and the Swing 55 - by opting for solid silver you naturally find more richness in tone and the ability to really push the sound to extremes of dynamics.
