JodyJazz DV Mouthpiece

From the Jody Jazz website:
The JodyJazz DV is the state of the art in saxophone mouthpieces. We have a patent pending on
two different features in the mouthpiece. My main goal with this mouthpiece was to create the most efficient mouthpiece possible. That means that there are a huge amount of harmonics present in the sound and therefore the projection of the mouthpiece is huge. Another goal was to eliminate the annoying shrillness that is associated with loud bright mouthpieces.

The DV is an amazing thing to play. We are using a new proprietary CNC facing technology that puts the perfect facing curve on the mouthpiece which results in absolutely no dead spots in the vibration of the reed. In other words all notes in all ranges respond equally. It has a husky barrel-chested tone while being able to sing and soar over the top of any band. Sub toning and low notes are extremely easy and the altissimo is out of this world. Intonation is spot on. Be prepared to have possibly the most fun you ever have had on the saxophone.

Players who now or in the past have played, Guardala, Dukoff, Beechler, Jumbo Java, SR Tech, Vandoren V16, Yanigisawa, or any of the bright mouthpieces out there will be sure to love The DV. The is not just another bright mouthpiece. There will be noticeable differences (improvements).

Players who play or have played my ESP or ESP-X and wanted more volume or a brighter sound will most definitely want to try the DV.

In addition I have found that many straight ahead jazz players who tend to favour mouthpieces that are a little brighter than most mainstream dark mouthpieces have a very high chance of making the DV their new mouthpiece. All saxophone players are amazed to find a saxophone mouthpiece that works so efficiently, where the articulation is so clean and it's so easy to go from low to high and vice versa.

The response that I've had from a wide variety of players tells me that the appeal of the DV will be very broad indeed. Like I say, prepare for the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

The DV is available for Tenor Saxophone in the following facings:
7   = .101
7* = .108
8* = .116

We recommend the 7* for the majority of players. Supplied with Rovner Ligature, Cap & Mouthpiece Pouch.

The DV is manufactured on the most sophisticated computer controlled Lathes and Mills, yet the DV benefits from a high degree of hand finishing. The attention to detail in design and finishing given to the DV results in a stunning work of art that plays like a dream come true. This amount of care takes time and means that we are not able to meet the demand for this piece as quickly as we would like to.

Subject: Thanks! Jodyjazz ESP mpc
Hi, I'm just writing to thank you for your great service.  I ordered a Jodyjazz ESP mpc (alto - size 7) on Monday morning and I had it by Tuesday lunchtime! The mouthpiece in question is phenomenal - love it!  Thanks once again, Martin.
PS By the way, the reviews of the mouthpieces on your site were really helpful!

Subject: Jody Jazz DV Alto
Well, if you guys were looking to impress, you've done it again. As you know, I was a little worried in case this mpc was too much for my level but it is exactly what I wanted and exactly as you described it. I got a fantastic tone "right out of the box". It was real easy to go right down to low B flat and the few Altissimo notes I've tried popped right out. I put a Vandoren jaZZ 2.0 reed on first off to try it and had to push that a bit more over the tip than I would usually (not excessively) and will now spend a bit of time trying other reeds/strengths. So, thanks again. With this I feel like I'm well and truly "sorted". Cheers Dougie

"After playing the Jody Jazz Tenor DV mouthpiece for a few seconds the first thought that came into my head was," Oh, so there's my sound!" This piece makes playing fun again. It has a very rich and powerful sound that enables you to play the entire range of the horn, from low Bb through the altissimo with ease. It gives you the freedom that you're looking for in a mouthpiece." Jeff Kashiwa - Native Language Recording Artist

"The DV is amazing. It's brighter, louder and fuller than the ESP-X, without sacrificing any of the ease and control. I thought that nothing could exceed the ESP-X in these terms, but I was wrong. If you play modern styles, you MUST try this mouthpiece." Andy Snitzer - NYC

"The mouthpiece is amazing. This mouthpiece plays beautifully from top to bottom, loud and soft. I am really having fun playing again. AMAZING piece. Thanks Jody." Ed Calle - Miami, Florida

DV NY

"
The DV NY for Tenor Sax will appeal to the Straight Ahead player looking for the best playing and sounding mouthpiece that he or she can find. The mouthpiece is based on the popular DV model but has several modifications, the most significant being a deep chamber. All tests with players have been very positive and we've had great response from "Link" players.  And most importantly I’m completely satisfied and I’m in love with the mouthpiece. The DV NY occupies a similar place as the ESP and we think that players who like a wider mouthpiece in the mouth, and a more spread sound will choose the DV. Players who like more of a Berg Larsen focused sound and a thinner profile piece may prefer the ESP.

We will have a large variety of tip openings for the DV NY. Tip openings offered are: 6, 6*, 7, 7*, 8, 8*, 9*,

The most popular range will be 7*, 8, 8*. Players seem to prefer a size larger than what they would comparably play on a Link for example due to the relatively free blowing nature of the DV NY." -
Jody Espina

"The new DV New York models have arrived from Jody Jazz and as you would expect stand out as an impressive mouthpiece choice for your tenor sax.
The difference between the DV and the DV NY is most noticeable in the baffle; this is the metal ledge that leads from the mouthpiece tip before dropping in to the chamber. On the NY this is very low indeed, meaning that the 'drop' into the main chamber is not nearly as severe. This gives the NY a slightly less aggressive projection than the standard DV - but nevertheless retains a very big tone. Sub tones seem to be naturally warmer with the NY and the top notes cut very clearly. I would say there is a flexibility with this mouthpiece that is perhaps missing from some of the other, more full on - raucous, top end mouthpieces. A very good all rounder which promises a maturation of tone." - Will, sax.co.uk

The JodyJazz ESP is a metal mouthpiece with flawless workmanship, evident in the beautiful thin side and tip rails and hand cut baffles. This sax mouthpiece is machined from a solid bar of the finest virgin brass, meaning no seams! The ESP is beautifully plated with the finest 24kt, Hard Gold plating available. A very interesting feature is that the new Jody Jazz has a removable baffle with a 24kt Gold plated secondary reed which gives the mouthpiece more brilliance and projection.

The chamber is big and fat, and the sound is unusually full. Compared to many of the high baffle metal sax mouthpieces, the JodyJazz ESP will deliver a more round full sound with more bottom end without sacrificing high end or ease of playing.

The JodyJazz ESP
Gold Plated Metal Alto Saxophone Mouthpieces

The new ESP Alto Saxophone mouthpiece is a saxophone mouthpiece for everyone. Traditional Jazz players will find a warm round sounding piece that can produce the sounds of Bird, Cannonball and Johnny Hodges. Players looking for a more contemporary sound will love this saxophone mouthpiece with the spoiler in. You will have as much projection/volume as you will ever need and a bright crisp clean sound. This combination easily can produce the contemporary sounds of David Sanborn, Dave Koz, Grover Washington, Eric Marienthal etc.

The ESP Alto is available in the following tip openings:
ESP .074 = JodyJazz Classic 6
ESP .078 = JodyJazz Classic 7
ESP .083 = JodyJazz Classic 8
ESP .090 = JodyJazz Classic 9

The JodyJazz ESP
Gold Plated Metal Tenor Saxophone Mouthpieces

"I wanted a mouthpiece that could produce a sound that would melt butter. A piece that lets the player shape the sound, instead of the sound being dictated by a high baffle or restrictive tone chamber. I wanted all of the bottom end in the world while still being able to sizzle on the high end. To be able to have the vocal qualities of Johnny Hartman's deep lush baritone and Dinah Washington's cutting clarity. Most of all, I wanted a mouthpiece that plays so effortlessly that you can completely forget about it. I think that the goal in all of your equipment purchases should be to find the mouthpiece/reed/ligature/horn combination that allows you to forget about all of it and just play. I believe that the JodyJazz ESP is a metal tenor saxophone mouthpiece for the future that takes the best from the past. I hope that the JodyJazz ESP brings new zest and life into your playing, the way it has done for mine." Jody Espina

The ESP Tenor is available in the following tip openings:
ESP .080 = JodyJazz Classic 5 = Otto Link 5
ESP .090 = JodyJazz Classic 7 = Otto Link 6
ESP .100 = JodyJazz Classic 9 = Otto Link 7
ESP .105 = JodyJazz Classic 10.5 = Otto Link 7*
ESP .110 = JodyJazz Classic 12 = Otto Link 8
ESP .120 = JodyJazz Classic 15 = Otto Link 10

JodyJazz ESP-X Tenor Gold

The ESP-X is the brightest model. It is still not as bright as some of the very high baffle mouthpieces, but has plenty of brightness and the fullness and ease of playing that everyone loves about the ESP.

The ESP-X is available in the following tip openings:
ESP .080 = JodyJazz Classic 5 = Otto Link 5
ESP .090 = JodyJazz Classic 7 = Otto Link 6
ESP .100 = JodyJazz Classic 9 = Otto Link 7
ESP .110 = JodyJazz Classic 12 = Otto Link 8
ESP .120 = JodyJazz Classic 15 = Otto Link 10

More about the ESP-X:
"This mouthpiece came about when my friend Joe Mennonna, who is a great player, asked me to make him the brightest mouthpiece that I could out of the ESP Tenor Piece. From the first moment that he played it, he flipped and several guys that tried his mpc also flipped and ordered one on the spot. There is only one difference from the ESP and that is that the X has a higher baffle with a sharper break."
Jody Espina

Early reactions to the JodyJazz ESP-X Tenor Gold:

"The new ESP-X is the mouthpiece I have been searching for. It is bright, focused, and powerful without sacrificing warmth. Your mouthpieces rock -- thanks Jody!"
Laura Dreyer - Formerly w/ Diva* - Hear her 2003 release "Mysterious Encounter".

ESP-X for tenor - "Unbelievable! This is the most perfect mouthpiece for tenor I've played to date."
Joe Mennonna - Currently w/ Don Mclean, Tom Rush and others

Other comments on JodyJazz Mouthpieces:

"It is an absolutely amazing mouthpiece! Fat...Dark...and has a TON of presence and projection. Great job Jody!" Dino Govoni, January 2003

"I am having a blast playing your JodyJazz Esp Tenor Mouthpiece! It somehow manages to be both a better contemporary piece AND a better jazz piece than the Link I have been playing for all these years! Congrats!" David Mann, NY, NY

"A wonderful piece of craftsmanship made by a saxophone player for saxophone players. Thanks Jody!" Marc Vanden Eynden -

"Fantastic!!! ...the sound is unusually full and robust over the entire range of the horn. I'd suggest that ANY tenor saxophonist check this mouthpiece out. "  Steve Goodson, New Orleans, LA

"Jody, your JodyJazz Tenor ESP rocks the house! I've never played a mouthpiece with more versatility - ever." Wally West, Jazz Studies Faculty, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill

"WOW!!! Exactly what I've been looking for in a mouthpiece!" Bill Harris, Stamford, CT

"Your new soprano mouthpiece is a knockout and you will not be getting mine back! All the virtues of the tenor ESP apply to the soprano - what a fat sound in the lower and bottom registers! The sound has none of the nasal quality associated with the soprano sax. Well done, Jody, you have done it again!"  Robin King , Channel Islands, UK

"I just bought an ESP soprano mouthpiece from Jody, size .69 and I love it. It is warm, yet very modern sounding (but not in an annoying smooth jazz way!!). The intonation is great also. I haven't played a metal soprano mouthpiece in years since I stopped using my metal Selmer, and I definitely prefer the timbre of the JodyJazz." Laura Dreyer New York, New York

"All I can say is: WOW! I think you'll have another hit with that piece. I find for a metal mouthpiece it plays with a very warm sound without the spoiler. Louder and a bit sharper sounding with the spoiler. This piece does not sound shrill at all. The low notes are very full and the highs don't seem to lose much either. The intonation is right on with my horn (Yani SC901)."
Glen Fairfield  Central Coast, CA

"This mouthpiece sings! I wish I would have had your soprano ESP years ago, as it would have saved me a great deal of money on other mouthpieces I've bought. The ESP has great clarity, and blows easily through-out the whole range of the horn. I love the response at the bottom of the horn. The low notes respond quickly and easily. The sound is centered and not too spread. This continues up the horn, as it is full-sounding (not overly dark), and it brings out the best of the soprano (this is without the spoiler). The resistance is even, while my other mouthpieces (about 20) vary greatly. I love being able to run the full range of the horn, low Bb to high F, and back without making an embouchure adjustment.

Jody exhibits great craftsmanship and pride in his products; the side rails are thin and even, there are no rough file or machine markings, and the tip actually fits the reed ( I tried Rico Jazz Select, Alexander Superials, and Fibracell).

Jody is accessible and will work with you, above all he's a player!"
Rich Garcia , San Antonio, TX
