A wonderful unlacquered sax with particular appeal for contemporary and jazz players.

A top quality instrument from the first new Japanese saxophone maker for over 50 years. It oozes with the high level of quality you expect from Japanese musical instruments.

Forestone saxophones are treated with B.Air's DCTV method to improve the sound and resonance. This is a cryogenic process where the instrument is frozen to smooth out molecular stresses from the manufacturing process.

Cryogenic treatment puts the brass through a deep stress cycle, which relieves residual stress from manufacturing at the crystalline level and makes the body more resonant. It is a way of rapidly achieving the "played in" characteristic of a horn that has been stress-cycled by vibration.

Fingers glide effortlessly across keys that feel exceptionally even, smooth and positive. Hand built by one of Japan's best saxophone gurus, Mr Watanabe Atsushi.

Most saxes are covered in a thin lacquer to prevent them from tarnishing but this does slightly dampen the resonance of the metal. Unlacquered saxes are very popular as they allow the metal to resonate to it's full potential. They require cleaning to keep them shiny or you can leave them to tarnish and fairly soon they take on a nice vintage patina.

Recommended for: All serious sax players

This unlacquered Forestone really has a very big and open voice – there is a strong depth in the sound, and definite character to the sound, which is very pleasant – but in addition, there is bags of volume and projection on hand here, and I think the unlacquered brass has a big say in this. Just like the lacquered version, the ergonomics are satisfying and there is a strong and robust build; this sax should be considered a firm contender for jazz and contemporary-style players. Jim (
