The sax is made from regular brass before a black lacquer is applied which is thicker than the regular gold or clear lacquer. Classic look with silver plated body and keys - as used by the band of the Royal Marines.
To minimise cleaning, lacquered saxes are sprayed with a thin layer of plastic lacquer which slightly dampens the resonance of the metal. In contrast, unlacquered silver plated saxes have an addional layer of metal providing extra resonance.....but it is harder to keep them clean. Is it worth the extra effort? Yes - for all that extra resonance, power & projection!
