F48/F50 - cylindrical first 2/3s of length then flare - 'Great for straight ahead jazz playing giving the player the use of all sound colors possible' The 50 will be more free blowing than the 48. The F's were my favourites - to me they had a nice and open sound, with a big attack.

S48/S50 - straight cylinder - 'The most balanced….allows the player to shape the sound but when pushed holds its 'center' more than the others. Good choice for rock, pop and mainstream jazz.' I liked this one too, found it a bit more focused than the F.

A48/A50 - A stands for Arc. I found this one had a nice sub-tone and had a bit more of an intimate sound than the others.

Series II or III?

Selmer (Paris) Reference 36 Tenor Neck

This gold lacquered brass crook is a significant factor in making the Reference 36 sound like an old Selmer Balanced Action. Fits straight onto Yamaha 62, Yamaha Custom and Guardala. Sounds great on Selmer Series 2 & 3 but you will need to shorten the octave rod very slightly.

Selmer (Paris) Reference 54 Tenor Neck

This crook sits a little lower and is a significant factor in making the Reference 54 sound like an old Mark 6. Fits straight onto Yamaha 62 (not the old model), Yamaha Custom and Guardala. Sounds great on Selmer Series 2 & 3 but you will need to shorten the octave rod very slightly. If you have a Reference 36 this is a great add on to get those Mark 6 tones.

The "BOOSTER" has been developed by Selmer (Paris) with spiral grooves on the inside tenon of the neck. This different surface changes the air flow producing a more focused sound and enhances high pitched sounds with a broad and rich tone.

Which model?

Yanagisawa 64 Brass Tenor Neck

I tried fitting this crook to a Yani 991 and found that this crook gave a more internalised and brighter tone than the standard Yani brass crook. Particularly around the mid-register, the tone was more focussed in middle frequencies, giving a very 'upfront' response.

In terms of fitting these crooks on other saxes, I found that they slot nicely on to the Yamaha 62 and Custom models, but I found them to be very loose on all Selmer and Keilwerth saxophones.

Yanagisawa 65 Brass Tenor Neck

I found the tone on this crook a lot fuller and more open than the 64. It seemed similar to the standard 991 crook, but with a tad more breadth to the tone for my money. It also produced a very expansive sub-tone. Very nice stuff!

In terms of fitting these crooks on other saxes, I found that they slot nicely on to the Yamaha 62 and Custom models, but I found them to be very loose on all Selmer and Keilwerth saxophones

Yanagisawa 66 Brass Tenor Neck

I found this crook to be fairly similar to the 64 in tone. Perhaps a tad more edge and hardness overall, and I don't think it was quite as open as the 65. A good choice if you want to cut through!

Yanagisawa 92 Bronze Tenor Neck

If there is one criticism that's occassionally made about the Yani T901 it's that the tone is a little lightweight. Well, here's the solution - put a bronze crook on it. Tested here by our own Jim Cheek he described it as warmer with a more breathy vintage tone.

Yanagisawa 95 Sterling Silver Tenor Neck

This solid silver crook reduces resistance when you blow and really opens the sound up. Its as if the air flows more smoothly over the silver. I tried it on my Dave Guardala and the improvement was instantaneous and dramatic. For the same amount of effort so much more sound comes out of the sax.

Yamaha Custom G1 Tenor Neck

The G1 Neck is more open sounding, with more volume & tone variation at different volumes. It enhances the overtones in the altissimo register. Improved projection with some edge in the upper registers while covering the darker, soft volumes nicely in the low registers.

Yamaha Custom F1 Tenor Neck

The Yamaha F1 neck is the most open and flexible of all Yamaha's necks. The taper isn't quite as radical as that of the G1 so the intonation is easier to manage around the higher register.
