On March 5th 2002 we visited the Selmer factory in Paris.

A fascinating trip and quite remarkable to witness the creative process behind these beautiful saxophones.

We saw very little automation and not a conveyor belt in sight! - just a dedicated team of skilled craftsmen producing instruments with tradition, heart and soul.

The company is still 100% owned by the Selmer family and run by Patrick, grandson of Henri who started the business.

Every component is carefully handmade using traditional skills handed down over the past 80 years.

Soldering

Polishing

Lacquering

This is what we call a "second grade" sax!

It takes around 1 hour to hand engrave and each engraving is unique.

Mouthpieces are not made in a mould. They are made by hand and turned out from a solid block of ebonite.
Great news.. Selmer are making the Soloist mouthpieces again!
